Small diesel engine?
Source:Internet Author:Unknow Pubdate:2008-04-12

I am interested in obtaining a small diesel engine to use on a home-built off-road vehicle project of mine.  Something on the order of 5-10 hp would be all I need.

But either I am not good at finding them or they are hard to find, at least at any price I would be willing to pay.

Does anyone know of a source for a diesel engine that might fit the bill?

A few questions:

What price are you willing to pay?
Why do you demand diesel?
Must it be a compression ignition engine?

Well, I don't know what I would pay.  I haven't been able to find anything that is even of that size very often.  I did see a 6.5 hp I think it was for about $2500.  I gotta tell you, that seems like robbery to me, but what do I know? 字串9

I prefer diesel because my truck is diesel, so that simplifies fuel storage, etc.  Also, typically in my experience, diesel engines have better torque vs rpm for the kind of use an off-road vehicle would see.

Why a compression engine?  Well, you got me there.  What other type of engine am I going to find in the 5 - 10 hp range that uses diesel?  I don't guess I am driven to compression ignition, but does that help the torque vs rpm curves I would prefer?

I have a generator set with a single cylinder, air cooled Yanmar diesel and it works marginally well.  No problem under heavy load; however, it stinks (exhaust smells bad) when under light loads.

Sorry, but I am unable to help you in your search.

There are a few companies working on spark ignited diesels.  This is a push by the military, as they are trying to move towards a common fuel.

The power loss of a spark ignited diesel is usually in the range of 10% when compared to an engine of the same size that runs pump gasoline.  This is because the compression ratio has to be reduced in order to avoid detonation.  These spark ignited diesels are often use direct injection and have combustion characteristics similar to a stratified charge engine.

All of this is academic though, as it would not meet your first and second requirement.

The engines I see the most are Lombardini. 4.5-9.8hp singles are shown on their web site. ISZ

"Old" means you can't buy a new one, but you might find an old one.

I did a search on ebay.  There are some engines that the seller calls Yanmar "clones".

Does anybody know anything about them?

I've seen what I think you want on ebay for approx. $200.00

MAragorn (Mechanical) 9 Feb 07 21:00
well bigmo460....wanna give me a hint?

patdaly (Mechanical) 12 Feb 07 12:05
Maragon, they were 449 plus shipping on Ebay, I happened to find them doing a 5Hp briggs search, I think the seller was Sterling engines. In any instance, they had a bunch of them and they were a Chinese knockoff. Ill see if I can find them again and post.

It depends on what you want weight wise.  Many sailboat engines are watercooled diesels that fit your HP rating.  Westerbeke, Yanmar, Kubotas, volvo's.  Etc.  They all weigh a good bit.
